Overview:  Chelsea Olympics 2012

August 6-10, 2012 Olympic Intensive Week

There were 17 countries represented in the Chelsea School Olympic Villages:  Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea and USA.  Each country was led by a teacher.

Students were randomly assigned a country village.  For 3 afternoons, children convened with their team mates in their country villages, learned about the culture of their country team and made preparation for the Opening Ceremonies of the Chelsea Olympics.  Students made hats, props, learned cooking traditional dishes or learned how to use chopsticks, decorated their classrooms, painted the windows with flags or national icons of their country while some have invited parent resources to discuss their culture to the students.

Thursday was the Opening Ceremonies and it was followed by the 6 challenging FUN games events:  Target Throw, Ring Toss, Stacking Cups, Strength Test, Hula Hoops and Pin the Olympic Rings.  An approximately 1.5km marathon culminated the games events at around 1.30pm.  The awarding ceremonies proceeded to acknowledge the gold, silver and bronze medalists among our Chelsea athletes.

Thursday was our sleepover night, too and after dinner at the school hall, children slept with their teammates in their country villages.  The Friday Assembly was a Blue Medal Awarding Ceremony for those that embodied the NZC Key Competencies and demonstrated true Olympic Spirit such as sportsmanship, camaraderie and/or teamwork.
